  8.      << WHAT IS LEHIPEDS? >>
  9.  
  10.         LEHIPEDS is an easy to use Medical Office Management System. The
  11.         program is designed for use in primary care (e.g. pediatric,
  12.         family practice, internal medicine, etc.) solo or small group
  13.         practices up to 4 or 5 doctors. 
  14.  
  15.         This program was developed by a business manager nurse, Marilyn S.
  16.         Holt, R.N. and pediatrician Roger N. Holt, M.D. It has been under
  17.         continuous use and development in Dr. Holt's pediatric medical
  18.         office for over 5 years.
  19.  
  20.         The program features separate files for each family member with a
  21.         capacity for 100,000 patients and 1 million transactions. Fees,
  22.         diagnosis codes, and CPT codes are user defined. You can print
  23.         HCFA 1500 insurance forms, patient billing statements, collection
  24.         letters, daily log, and numerous financial reports. There is a
  25.         regular database, an inactive database and a database for patients
  26.         with specific needs or problems. The program handles group or mass
  27.         payments such as capitation payments. Pop-up help screens and
  28.         detailed 87 page manual included. Electronic claims submission for
  29.         Florida users.

  31.         Registered users get search utilities, additional practice
  32.         management reports, and a Managed Care Module.

  34.         THERE IS ONE VERSION OF LEHIPEDS: IT RUNS EQUALLY WELL AS A SINGLE
  35.         USER PROGRAM OR ON A NETWORK.

  39.      << SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS >>

  41.         IBM compatible 386, 486, or Pentium with 640K memory. Extended
  42.         memory helpful, but not required. DOS 3.x or higher. This is a DOS
  43.         program although it will run well within Microsoft Windows
  44.         environment. Video monitor: Mono, EGA, or VGA.  Dot matrix (or
  45.         Laser) printer.

  64.         This file describes the necessary procedure to install the
  65.         LEHIPEDS Program if it was downloaded in the form of a single
  66.         zipfile named lhpeds31.zip. 
  67.        
  68.         The entire program files; auxiliary files; and manual files are
  69.         included within the zipfile, lhpeds31.zip.
  70.  
  71.         To install, proceed with the following steps:
  72.  
  73.           - Using the DOS mkdir (md) command, create a directory named
  74.             PEDBASE off the root directory of your hard drive.
  75.  
  76.           - Log onto the PEDBASE directory. Copy the file lhpeds31.zip to
  77.             the PEDBASE directory. 
  78.  
  79.           - Using the pkunzip utility (this utility is available on most
  80.             bulletin boards and on-line services), unzip the files in
  81.             lhpeds31.zip into the PEDBASE directory.

  83.           - One of the files included in lhpeds31.zip is SETDIR.EXE. Run
  84.             this mini-program to set-up the necessary directory structure
  85.             for LEHIPEDS. After running SETDIR.EXE, you will have the
  86.             following directory structure:

  100.             KEY POINT: It is absolutely imperative that you create this
  101.             directory structure and do NOT modify it. The program will not
  102.             function properly without this specific directory structure.

  106.             You have now installed the program! However, before you will
  107.             be able to run the program you will need to configure your
  108.             computer properly. See the following discussion regarding
  109.             configuration.

  119.      << CONFIGURATION >>
  120.  
  121.         This will be done by entering the files, buffers, and ansi.sys
  122.         commands in your CONFIG.SYS file. If you do not know what the
  123.         CONFIG.SYS is, refer to your DOS Manual. 
  124.  
  125.         Your CONFIG.SYS file should include the following commands; you
  126.         should edit the file accordingly:
  127.  
  128.           - You need to reference your ANSI.SYS device driver. If this
  129.             driver is in your DOS directory. use the command
  130.             "device=c:\dos\ansi.sys" (no quotes).
  131.  
  132.           - You need to set your buffers and files statements. This is
  133.             somewhat of a trial and error process. If you are running
  134.             the program from a single user machine, try setting
  135.             buffers=32 and files=50. Some systems may require more
  136.             buffers and files to be open.
  137.  
  138.             If you are running the program on a network, you will need
  139.             to set files=100 (or more). Consult your LAN Manual for a
  140.             buffers recommendation. In addition, some LANs may require a
  141.             FCBS setting; consult your LAN Manual.
  142.  
  143.             REMEMBER: These settings are read into the computer during
  144.             the boot-up sequence. Therefore, after any changes or
  145.             additions are made to your CONFIG.SYS, you MUST re-boot your
  146.             computer. If, after one group of changes, you need to make
  147.             additional changes, you will again need to reboot, etc.
  148.  
  149.         Another important aspect of configuring your system involves
  150.         setting certain files to "read-only" status. This will prevent
  151.         accidental deletion or modification of important program files.
  152.         Furthermore, some LANs (e.g.Lantastic) will not run properly
  153.         unless the program files are read-only. If necessary, you can
  154.         always later remove the read-only attribute. Use the following
  155.         commands to set the read-only attribute (no quotes):
  156.  
  157.           - "c:\dos\attrib +r *.exe"
  158.           - "c:\dos\attrib +r *.bat"
  159.           - "c:\dos\attrib +r *.def"
  160.           - "c:\dos\attrib +r *.com"
  161.  
  162.         Before continuing, be sure to read the Introductory sections and
  163.         the Getting Help and Getting Started sections of the manual. See
  164.         instructions below on printing the manual.

  176.      << PRINTING THE MANUAL >>

  178.         From the PEDBASE directory issue the command LHMANUAL. This will
  179.         bring up a menu allowing you to print the entire (or parts of) the
  180.         Manual. You should print the full Manual which is 87 pages.
  181.         Options to print specific sections of the Manual are handy in case
  182.         of a paper jam. You do not have to restart printing from the
  183.         beginning of the Manual.

  186.      << RUNNING THE PROGRAM >>
  187.  
  188.         You are now finally ready to run the program. The program is
  189.         comprised of several interrelated Modules. 
  190.  
  191.         The first time you run the program you will want to install
  192.         certain default data files that come with the program. To do this,
  193.         you should initially run the Main Module, LEHIPEDS; and then the
  194.         Customization Module, LEHICSTM. When these modules load, they will
  195.         automatically install the default files.
  196.  
  197.         There are two ways to run the modules:
  198.  
  199.           - You can enter the name of the appropriate executable files. In
  200.             the present example, you would first type "LEHIPEDS" (no
  201.             quotes) to load the Main Module. When you get to the Main
  202.             Menu, exit the module. Then type "LEHICSTM" (no quotes) to
  203.             load the Customization Module. When you get to the opening
  204.             menu of this module, you may then exit. 
  205.  
  206.           - We supply an integrated batch file menu, called EDMENU.BAT,
  207.             which allows you to choose among the various program modules. 
  208.             Type "EDMENU" to get this menu. By pressing the appropriate
